Pre-Christmas Event
St. Mary's R C Cathedral
Clayton Street West, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5HH
Wednesday 4th December 2024
Kevin Doonan
Our pre-Christmas event this year took place in Newcastle's Roman Catholic Cathedral. Originally designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and built between 1842 and 1844, the cathedral is a Grade I listed building and a fine example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture he championed. In 1872 the spectacular tower and steeple designed by Dunn & Hansom were added.
We were guided around by Cathedral Architect Kevin Doonan, who described the marvellous changes that have been made to the buildings during his tenure which began in 2001. We also had an organ recital from the cathedral organist, David Allison.
It would not be appropriate to have our usual finger buffet and drinks in the cathedral, so we booked a buffet style meal at the Ottoman Turkish Restaurant which is directly opposite the cathedral entrance. This was costed separately on the booking form as the space in the restaurant is restricted to thirty people. The numbers for the visit were not restricted./p>
Booking form as originally circulated to members (closed Friday 22 November 2024).
Travel: Newcastle have a home game against Liverpool with kick off at 7.45 pm. Many supporters will be in the town early, so please make allowances for this in your travel arrangements. Newcastle Central Station (main line and metro trains) is within walking distance. Parking will best be done 'out of town'. Many buses and metro trains come into the town from all directions.
