Members' Evening
Wednesday 15th January 2025, 7.00 for 7.30 pm
Host: Hugh Dixon
The Members' Evening is an opportunity for members to raise topics of interest, air architectural enthusiasms, or simply fly architectural kites. This year, the evening's topics were:
- Pam Wallhead talked about the restoration of the nineteenth-century stained glass windows in St Cuthbert's Chapel, Inner Farne, and the possibility that they were by the celebrated Tyneside manufacturer William Wailes;
- Angela Kellett talked about her ancestor Gualbert* Saunders, another nineteenth-century stained-glass manufacturer, who worked in close collaboration with architect William Burges on such buildings as Cardiff Castle. He was himself also an architect and furniture designer;
- and Richard Pears talked about the building of Sir Arthur Haselrig's house at Auckland Castle on the site of the demolished medieval chapel, and its fate under Bishop John Cosin.
*not a typo, but the supposedly Welsh spelling which he adopted.
