Members' Evening

Host: Hugh Dixon

Stained glass

The Members' Evening is an opportunity for members to raise topics of interest, air architectural enthusiasms, or simply fly architectural kites. This year, the evening's topics were:

  • Pam Wallhead talked about the restoration of the nineteenth-century stained glass windows in St Cuthbert's Chapel, Inner Farne, and the possibility that they were by the celebrated Tyneside manufacturer William Wailes;
  • Angela Kellett talked about her ancestor Gualbert* Saunders, another nineteenth-century stained-glass manufacturer, who worked in close collaboration with architect William Burges on such buildings as Cardiff Castle. He was himself also an architect and furniture designer;
  • and Richard Pears talked about the building of Sir Arthur Haselrig's house at Auckland Castle on the site of the demolished medieval chapel, and its fate under Bishop John Cosin.

*not a typo, but the supposedly Welsh spelling which he adopted.
